  14. <p>     DIED. Mollie Parnis, ninetyish, fashion designer whose
  15. versatile dresses were worn by First Ladies from Mamie
  16. Eisenhower to Betty Ford; in New York City. Starting as an
  17. assistant saleswoman in the showroom of a blouse manufacturer,
  18. Parnis went on to build a multimillion-dollar fashion business
  19. with her husband Leon Livingston. A green-and-blue silk taffeta
  20. Parnis dress worn by Mamie Eisenhower at a reception in 1955
  21. made headlines when a guest appeared wearing the same dress.
  22. Parnis, untroubled, explained,"I do not sell directly to any
  23. wearer. Nor do I usually make one of a kind; that's what makes
  24. this country a great democracy."
